Director Shinichiro Watanabe chose the three episodes from this popular sci-fi action series he felt contained the best overall sound quality and remixed them for Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio. The second trio of episodes was voted on by Japanese audiences. Watanabe makes skillful use of the new technology. The sound effects are highly directional, as is much of the dialogue: when Jet and Spike yell to each other at the beginning of "Asteroid Blues," their voices seem to come from different parts of the ship. However, the only thing new about this set is the remixed soundtrack; neither the visuals nor the story lines have been changed. Viewers who already have the complete series don't need to run out and buy the reworked episodes--unless they have a jazzy new sound system they want to show off.
